Collaborative Presentation

The title of our exhibit was "The Canvas of the Web".
We named our exhibit this because both of our artists use the web as a huge part of their work. Our 2 artists were Benjamin Fry and Marc Napier. The theme of our exhibit is the collection and documentation of information. Both artists develop programs that when given information/ a website, will generate images using that information. The are both extremely interesting and while Frys work has more of a programmers flair, Napiers past experience and training as a painter makes his work more visually appealing.

Parable of the Garden

I am still undecided about the exhibit on the first floor of Holman. I have visited it a few times and while i can appreciate the work, nothing really spoke to me personally. I have to admit that i was shocked to see the abundance of media based art that was created in these regions of the world. I don't know why but i had just assumed that although those countries had the technology to make works like these, no one would be inclined to use it. It was re assuring to see that art is made all over the world and in all different mediums. I like the idea of the exhibit and grouping work by a common theme and i feel that the piece entitled "Happy Meal" was very effective. I like the simplicity of the piece and the subject matter. I like how the piece comments on many things at once. I was interested to learn about the artist during the presentation and how his pieces normally comment on the relationships between cultures. The little girls face and content while she is eating and that is what makes the piece I think.

Dia:Beacon Visit

My favorite thing that we saw at Dia Beacon was the room that was filled with Andy Warhols “Shadow”. Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburg in 1928. This piece is a random shape placed on a backround but somehow still striking and interesting. I have always like Warhol’s work because of the color and repetition. I liked the way that it was displayed in the museum because it took up the entire room and surrounded me. I am always amazed by his ability to take one shape and present it so many different ways. His use of color and contrast creates extremely interesting compositions. This piece was made in 1979 and there is a set of 80 of them total in all different colors but they are all the same size on canvas. Warhol did many of these types of pieces.
